Research and Development
While we’re focused on producing the best eating apples in the world each season, at Honeybear we’re also growing the amazing new apple varieties of tomorrow. A new variety can take seven to ten years to perfect and our research and development team invests years in creating exciting new varieties. Our objective is to give consumers a new apple eating experience and provide varietal excellence year round to our retail partners across the country.
Our R & D teams experiment with hundreds if not thousands of cross pollinated varieties in our development orchards, zeroing in on the varietals that offer the best promise of a unique flavor profile, great eating experience and overall appearance for retailers and consumers. From there we test those new varietals in targeted geographical micro climate growing regions that will support the new varieties and assure consistent production and eating experience. Only after this arduous process and testing will a new variety be offered to our retail partners. In 2015 we launched Pazazz, a star of the Honeybear R+D program and a winter apple that offers Wow Right Now.
To achieve our goal of producing the best eating apples in the world, Honeybear selects best in class growers and locations in every one of domestic and Southern Hemisphere apple growing regions. We work with growers who have been in their orchards for generations and propagate test trees to ascertain the unique climate, soil and other growing conditions to understand the growing potential for our apples. Once optimum growing sites are pinpointed, our team works closely to monitor the development of each new variety, carefully examining the characteristics of the fruit and each variety’s ability to maintain premium quality and guaranteed consistency season after season.
